Graham Johnson is the International Chair in Art Song and Vocal Accompaniment at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama. A globally renowned accompanist, he specializes in vocal music across classical genres, particularly Lieder and French Song. Born in Rhodesia, he studied piano in London from 1967 under Gerald Moore and Geoffrey Parsons.
He founded the Songmakers’ Almanac in 1976 to explore overlooked vocal repertoires, collaborating with singers like Felicity Lott and Thomas Hampson. Johnson has accompanied over 250 Songmakers’ programs and major artists such as Jessye Norman and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. His discography with Hyperion Records includes landmark recordings of Schubert’s Lieder and ongoing Schumann/French Song series, featuring his pioneering program notes.
Notable accolades include four Gramophone Awards, the Royal Philharmonic Society’s Instrumentalist of the Year (1998), and the Wigmore Hall Medal (2013). He has also authored influential works like The French Song Companion and served as Song Advisor for the Wigmore Hall Competition.
Johnson’s career spans live performances, recordings, and pedagogical contributions, solidifying his legacy as a pivotal figure in art song interpretation and preservation.
