Graeme Smith is an Associate Professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics at the University of Waterloo. He is affiliated with the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC), Perimeter Institute, and JILA as a Fellow Adjoint. His research focuses on quantum information theory, quantum networks, and the mathematical foundations of quantum mechanics. He actively advises graduate students and postdocs in these areas.
Research interests include Quantum Shannon Theory, Mathematical Physics, and the Physics of Information, with a particular emphasis on entanglement, error correction, and quantum metrology. His work bridges theoretical physics and advanced mathematics.
He currently supervises graduate students Alex Kazachek, Shreyas Natarajan, Sukanya Ghosal, and Esha Swaroop. Past students include notable alumni such as Joshua Levin (QCWare) and Anthony Polloreno (Apple). His postdoctoral team includes Paula Belzig, Alex Meiburg, Peixue Wu, and Yunkai Wang.
Graeme Smith holds a PhD from the California Institute of Technology and maintains an active recruitment effort for graduate students and postdocs, emphasizing interdisciplinary topics like quantum networks and the physics of information.
