Grace X. Ma, PhD is Associate Dean for Health Disparities, Founding Director of the Center for Asian Health, Chair and Laura H. Carnell Professor in the Department of Urban Health and Population Science at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine, Temple University. She is also a Professor at Fox Chase Cancer Center of Temple University Health System, where she leads groundbreaking research in health disparities and community-engaged interventions.
Research Interests: Dr. Ma is a nationally recognized behavioral health scientist whose work centers on community-based participatory research (CBPR), patient-centered outcomes research (PCOR), and health disparities. Her research spans cancer prevention and control (liver, colorectal, cervical, lung), chronic disease intervention (Type 2 diabetes, hypertension), and viral-related health research. She investigates social, cultural, psychological, and structural determinants of health through translational, multidisciplinary approaches.
Publication Trends: With over 240 peer-reviewed articles, Dr. Ma’s recent work emphasizes large-scale intervention trials, implementation science, and community-engaged research, particularly among underserved and Asian American populations. Her publications reflect a strong focus on improving healthcare access, quality, and equity through evidence-based, culturally tailored interventions.

Advising and Grants: Dr. Ma has mentored over 270 minority junior faculty, postdoctoral fellows, doctoral, and master’s students, establishing a robust pipeline for underrepresented researchers. She has received continuous funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), federal agencies, and other sponsors, directing more than 100 longitudinal studies, including cluster randomized trials and dissemination projects across diverse community settings.
Labs and Teams: As Founding Director of the Center for Asian Health, Dr. Ma built a national network of over 400 community organizations. She co-founded the first Community Cancer Health Network in the U.S. Eastern Region and leads multidisciplinary teams across Temple University and partner institutions to advance population health and equity.
