Professor Grace Lees-Maffei is a leading scholar in Design History and Programme Director for the Professional Doctorate in Heritage (DHeritage) at the University of Hertfordshire's School of Creative Arts. She holds editorial leadership roles, including Chair of the Editorial Board for the Journal of Design History (Oxford University Press) and Co-Series Editor for Bloomsbury's Cultural Histories of Design. Her research focuses on heritage, globalization in design, domesticity, and design historiography, with emphasis on mediation through domestic advice literature, graphic design, and advertising.
Education: PhD in Design History (University of Portsmouth, 2005), MA RCA in History of Design (V&A/RCA, 1996), BA Hons in English Literature (1994). External roles include Trustee of the Design History Society and member of the AHRC Peer Review College. Awards include the University's Vice-Chancellor's Award for Living the Values (2020) and a 20-year Long Service Award (2018).
Research projects include Designing Domesticity (AHRC-funded, 2014), Designing Hands (2020-2021), and The Hand Book (forthcoming MIT Press, 2024). She has supervised over 10 doctoral students and contributed to academic development through roles like Chair of the University's Researcher Development Group (2015-2019).
Public engagement includes media appearances, editorial leadership, and service to professional societies. Current research explores tactile design history, heritage, and interdisciplinary design methodologies.
