Grace Kao is the IBM Professor of Sociology and holds a courtesy appointment in Ethnicity, Race, and Migration at Yale University, where she directs the Center for Empirical Research on Stratification and Inequality (CERSI). She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Chicago (1997), with prior degrees from UC Berkeley (A.B., 1990) and the University of Chicago (A.M., 1992). Her research focuses on racial/ethnic educational disparities, immigrant adaptation, and the sociology of K-Pop, with notable contributions to understanding interracial relationships and Asian American experiences.
Dr. Kao’s scholarship bridges education, race, and cultural studies, highlighted by books like *The Company We Keep* (2019) and *Diversity and the Transition to Adulthood in America* (2022). She has received prestigious awards such as the ASA Contribution to the Field Award (2017) and the Robin Murphy Williams Lectureship (2018). Her work has been cited over 15,000 times, reflecting significant impact in sociological research.
Her recent studies explore K-Pop fandoms’ sociopolitical influence, pandemic-era racial dynamics, and educational outcomes across marginalized groups. She teaches courses on race/ethnicity, immigration, and the sociology of music, contributing to both undergraduate and graduate education at Yale.
