Grace Elizabeth Hale is the Commonwealth Professor of American Studies and History at the University of Virginia. She specializes in 20th Century US Cultural History, the US South, photography history, popular music, and documentary studies.
- Education: Ph.D. in History from Rutgers University (1995), M.A. (1991) and B.B.A. (1986) from the University of Georgia.
Research Interests focus on cultural history, Southern identity, photography as historical evidence, and intersections between music and social change. Her recent projects include the book In the Pines (2023) examining lynching legacies, and Cool Town (2020) analyzing Athens' alternative music scene.
Academic Contributions include co-directing the NEH-funded Participatory Media project on collaborative media-making, serving on the Photogrammar advisory board for FSA-OWI photography archives, and contributing to the Athens Music Project oral histories.
Scientific Awards include the Mississippi Historical Society Book of the Year Award (2023), Malcolm Bell, Jr. and Muriel Barrow Bell Award (2021), Willie Lee Rose Award (1998), and Phi Beta Kappa Book Award (1998).
