Grace An is Associate Professor of French and Cinema Studies at Oberlin College. She holds a PhD in Romance Studies from Cornell University (2004) and an AB from Bryn Mawr College (1993). Her scholarship examines French visual culture through feminist and global perspectives, with current book projects on actress-activist Delphine Seyrig and documentary ethics.
Research Focus: Specializes in 20th-century French visual culture, feminist media, transnational cinema (particularly French-East Asian intersections), and essay film traditions. Current book project Disobedient Muse: Delphine Seyrig, Feminism, and The Cinema analyzes women's filmmaking during 1960s-1970s feminist movements. Co-editing a special issue on documentary ethics and care politics.
Teaching: Offers courses on French New Wave, stardom/sexuality, queer media, documentary film, and the 1968 cultural revolutions. Developed intensive courses 'Tasting France' and 'Poetry & Protest in the Streets: Paris 1968'.
Scholarly Recognition: Commissioned by Cinémathèque Française for Agnès Varda exhibition catalogue; publishes in French Screen Studies; advisory board member for Imaginaires journal.
