Gordon H. Chang

Gordon H. Chang is the Olive H. Palmer Professor in Humanities and Professor of History at Stanford University. He earned his B.A. from Princeton University and Ph.D. from Stanford, and previously served as Senior Associate Vice Provost for Undergraduate Education (2019-2022). His academic appointments include affiliations with American Studies, Center for East Asian Studies, and Modern Thought and Literature programs.

Chang's research examines historical connections between race/ethnicity and foreign relations, with focus areas including:

• Trans-Pacific diplomatic, cultural, and social relations
• U.S.-China historical engagement
• Chinese diaspora and Asian American history
• 19th-century Chinese railroad workers in North America (current co-directed international project)

His publications consistently explore Chinese American experiences and U.S.-Asia relations, with recent works emphasizing labor history, immigration narratives, and contemporary geopolitical tensions. Awarded fellowships include:

• Society of American Historians Fellowship

Chang actively advises doctoral students including Miri Powell and Vannessa Velez, and serves as dissertation reader for Jeffery Chen and Chanhee Heo. He teaches courses on America-China relations, American Marxism, and anti-Asian violence.
