Gordon Bals serves as Associate Professor of Divinity at Beeson Divinity School, Samford University, where he joined the full-time faculty in 2022 after nine years as an adjunct instructor. He directs the Master of Arts in Christian Counseling program and teaches specialized courses in pastoral care, counselor formation, sexuality, and trauma response. As a board-certified pastoral counselor, Bals founded Daymark Pastoral Counseling in 1997 and maintains active clinical practice alongside his academic duties.
His educational background includes an EdD from the University of Sarasota, an MA in Counseling from Colorado Christian University, and a BS from the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. Bals remains professionally engaged through the Christian Association for Psychological Studies and American Association of Christian Counselors.
Bals' scholarly work centers on the integration of Christian theology with clinical counseling practice, with particular emphasis on family dynamics, trauma recovery, and adolescent development. His research consistently explores how biblical principles inform contemporary psychological challenges, especially in marital relationships and father-daughter dynamics. He actively translates academic insights into practical resources for pastors and congregational leaders through workshops and church training events.
Analysis of his publications reveals a sustained focus on applying theological concepts to real-world counseling scenarios, with increasing attention to posttraumatic growth and spiritual resilience since 2000. Recent works demonstrate growing engagement with adolescent mental health and the practical challenges of modern Christian parenting.
As director of the Master of Arts in Christian Counseling program, Bals mentors emerging counselors in faith-integrated therapeutic approaches. His professional workshops for church leaders represent significant knowledge transfer to the broader ministry community, though specific research grants are not documented in available sources.
Bals operates Daymark Pastoral Counseling as both a clinical practice and training ground for counseling students, while collaborating with local churches through the Beeson Divinity School's ministerial training initiatives to deliver specialized enrichment programs for congregational leaders.
