Gloria Silva is a Teaching Professor in the Department of Chemistry at Carnegie Mellon University (CMU), affiliated with the Mellon College of Science. She holds doctoral and pharmacy degrees from the Universidad Nacional de Córdoba (Argentina) and has over 35 years of academic experience spanning Argentina and the U.S. Her career includes roles such as Research Chemist, Visiting Professor, and leadership in curriculum development.
Education: Ph.D. in Chemistry (UNCo, 1988), Pharmacist (UNCo, 1983), B.Sc. Chemistry (UNCo, 1981). She completed postdoctoral fellowships at the University of Illinois at Chicago and UNCo, and served as a CONICET Investigator (1998–2001).
Research focuses on Bioorganic Chemistry, Natural Product Chemistry, and fluorescent dyes synthesis. Her work bridges theory and application in pharmacy, medicine, food science, and cosmetics. Notable projects include studying molecular recognition of DNA quadruplexes and innovative teaching methodologies like flipped classrooms.
Teaching specialties include Organic Chemistry, Natural Products, and interdisciplinary courses like The Culture of Color: Dyes, Chemistry and Sustainability. She has taught at CMU Qatar and pioneered outreach programs for K-12 students and the OSHER Institute.
Awards include the Premio Felix de Azara (2000), multiple teaching recognitions, and international fellowships. Silva has authored 30+ peer-reviewed articles, two book chapters, and holds a patent in fluorescent dye technology.
Administrative roles include Board member of the Academic Review Board (2014–present) and Senator representing Chemistry faculty (2012–2014). She actively judges STEM competitions and advises university-wide committees on student affairs and recognition programs.
