Glen Gendzel is a Professor of History at San José State University's College of Social Sciences, where he has taught since 2005 and served as Department Chair from 2016 to 2024. A native of the Bay Area (born in Oakland), he graduated from Palo Alto High School and UC Berkeley before earning his MA and PhD in History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
His research focuses on California history, political culture, immigration, nativism, and the Progressive Movement. Gendzel has published extensively on these topics, with recent work examining Irish immigration to California and historical anti-immigrant movements. His scholarship connects historical patterns to contemporary issues, particularly regarding immigration policy and direct democracy in California.
Gendzel's publications show a consistent focus on California's political evolution, with particular attention to the Progressive Era, immigration history, and the development of California's unique political culture. His work spans from the 19th century through the Cold War era, demonstrating both chronological breadth and thematic depth in American political history.

Gendzel teaches a wide range of undergraduate and graduate courses on California history and modern U.S. history, including Essentials of U.S. History, Industrial America, Crash Depression and War, Cold War America, and specialized courses on the American West, business history, and the 1960s. He has been featured in numerous media outlets including The Atlantic, USA Today, and RTÉ Irish national radio, where he provides historical context for contemporary political issues.
