Glen Cowan is Professor of Physics in the Department of Physics at Royal Holloway, University of London, where he has been part of the academic staff since 1998. He is affiliated with the Experimental Particle Physics Centre for Particle Physics and Astronomy and serves as a key contributor to the ATLAS Experiment at the Large Hadron Collider.
His educational background includes a BS in Physics from the University of California, Los Angeles (1981) and a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley (1988), with thesis work based on data from the TPC/Two-Gamma Experiment at SLAC. He completed postdoctoral research at the Max-Planck-Institute for Physics in Munich (1988-1992) and the University of Siegen (1992-1997), working on the ALEPH Experiment at CERN's Large Electron-Positron Collider.
Professor Cowan's research focuses on analyzing data from the ATLAS Experiment at the LHC. He coordinates and develops statistical methods and software for ATLAS data analysis, with particular emphasis on searches for the Higgs boson and physics beyond the Standard Model, including supersymmetry. His recent publications demonstrate expertise in top quark mass combinations, higgsino searches, deep learning applications for detector simulation, and track reconstruction performance.
His research portfolio includes significant contributions to the INSIGHTS: International Training Network for Statistics in High Energy Physics and Society project, where he served as Principal Investigator, along with multiple Consolidated Grants for the Centre for Particle Physics at Royal Holloway. He has supervised six research projects and students as indicated by the 'Supervised Work (6)' notation in his profile.
Professor Cowan teaches PH4515 'Computing and Statistical Data Analysis' as part of the University of London fourth-year program and first-year postgraduate curriculum in High Energy Physics, as well as PH3520, an introductory course in Elementary Particle Physics.
