Giuseppe Romano Compagnini is a Full Professor of Physical Chemistry (CHIM/02) at the University of Catania and Head of the PhD School in Materials Science and Nanotechnology. His career spans over 25 years in materials science and spectroscopy, with notable roles as visiting scientist at ETH Zurich and visiting professor at the University of Waterloo.
- Education: Master's Degree in Physics (1989) and PhD in Solid State Physics (1993) from the University of Catania
His research focuses on nanomaterials, plasmonics, photocatalysis, and laser ablation. His group develops nanostructured materials for catalysis and sensing, while he collaborates with the European Space Agency (ESA) on functional materials for space applications.
Prof. Compagnini has authored over 250 peer-reviewed papers with 9,000+ citations (h-index 50). He serves as Editor for the Elsevier journal Surfaces and Interfaces and acts as referee for international faculty and research project selections.

He leads the Thin Film and Nanostructures Lab (LFSN) at the Department of Chemical Sciences, University of Catania, and is part of the BRIT Bio-nanotech Research and Innovation Tower's Scientific Council. His teaching spans Industrial Chemistry and Materials Chemistry programs, including international institutions like Queen Mary University of London and Cambridge University.
