Giuseppe Portale is an Associate Professor at the University of Groningen, affiliated with the Faculty of Science and Engineering and the Zernike Institute for Advanced Materials. He leads the Polymer Physics research group, focusing on polymer structure-property relationships and energy applications. His work includes studying perovskite materials, thin films, and nanostructured systems using advanced X-ray techniques.
Education and Career: PhD in Chemical Science from Sapienza University of Rome (2006), postdoc at ESRF (Grenoble, France), and staff scientist there until 2015. Joined Groningen as Assistant Professor (2015), promoted to Associate Professor (2021).
Research Interests:
- Structural characterization of polymers and soft materials
- Perovskite solar cells and energy materials
- Self-assembly and crystallization dynamics
- Proton-conducting membranes
Recent Work Trends: Recent articles emphasize perovskite passivation, organic solar cell optimization, and MXene-based battery materials. His work bridges synthesis, characterization, and application in renewable energy and advanced materials.
Awards and Grants:
- Three DPI grants (2017, 2018, 2021)
- NWO Materials-NL grant (2020)
- Editorial board member of Polymers
- Scientific reviewer for major synchrotrons (ALBA, DESY, ALS)
Lab and Collaborations: Active in the Zernike Institute's Macromolecular Chemistry group, collaborating with global synchrotron facilities and industry partners on materials for energy and biomedical applications.
