Giuseppe Albertoni serves as Full Professor of Medieval History at the Department of Literature and Philosophy, University of Trento since April 2019, following roles as Associate Professor (2007-2019) and Researcher (2000-2007). His academic journey began with secondary school teaching (1986-2000) before transitioning to university positions at Bologna and Trento.
His educational background includes a cum laude Literature degree from the University of Bologna (1985, supervisor Massimo Montanari) and a PhD in Historical Sciences from the University of San Marino (1994, supervisor Giuseppe Sergi), complemented by postdoctoral studies at the University of Turin (1996-97).

- Specializes in Carolingian/Ottonian identity formations, medieval Alpine settlements, and animal symbolism in early medieval society
- Examines late 19th/early 20th century Austrian/German medieval scholarship through nationalist lenses
As Principal Investigator for Horizon-MSCA-2021 project Zona Franca – Ideas of territory in the Carolingian Empire and PRIN 2017 project Ruling in hard times. Patterns of power and practices of government in the making of Carolingian Italy, he coordinates multinational research teams across Trento, Padua, Venice, and Pisa.

He has supervised doctoral programs as Coordinator (2019-2021) and Vice-Coordinator (2014-2019) of the Culture d'Europa PhD program, while serving on national scientific committees including the Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale for Medieval History (2021-2023). His leadership extends to directing the Trento research unit for PRIN 2010-11 on social conflicts in early medieval Italy.
Albertoni actively participates in major international research networks including the Medieval Academy of America, Società italiana dei medievisti (SISMED), and Centro interuniversitario per la Storia e l'archeologia dell'alto medioevo (SAAME), while organizing landmark conferences such as the 2024 Zona Franca workshop on Carolingian territorial concepts.
