Giuliana Guggino is a Full Professor at the University of Palermo, affiliated with the School of Medicine and Surgery, specifically within the Department of Health Promotion, Maternal and Child, Internal Medicine, and Specialist Excellence "G. D'Alessandro". She maintains active office hours at the Rheumatology department located at Piazza delle Clinica n2, specializing in rheumatology and autoimmune diseases.
Professor Guggino's research focuses on rheumatology, immunology, and autoimmune diseases, with particular expertise in systemic sclerosis, fibromyalgia, spondyloarthritis, and rheumatoid arthritis. Her work spans clinical research, biomarker discovery, therapeutic interventions, and understanding the immunological mechanisms underlying these conditions. She has made significant contributions to understanding the role of various cytokines (IL-9, IL-17, IL-22) in autoimmune pathogenesis and exploring novel treatments including JAK inhibitors and biologic therapies.
Her recent publications (2024-2025) demonstrate a strong focus on personalized medicine approaches in rheumatic diseases, biomarker identification for disease severity and progression, and innovative treatment strategies for complex conditions like systemic sclerosis, adult-onset Still's disease, and inflammatory myopathies. A notable trend is her involvement with the Italian Research Group in Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology (GIRRCS), contributing to multicenter observational studies that advance clinical practice in rheumatology.
Professor Guggino has supervised numerous medical theses covering diverse topics in rheumatology, including fibromyalgia management, IL-17 blockade therapies, and biomarker research. Her mentorship extends to clinical trials and translational research projects investigating novel therapeutic approaches and pathogenic mechanisms in autoimmune conditions.
