Giuliana Ferrari is a Full Professor of Molecular Biology at the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery, University Vita-Salute San Raffaele in Milan. She has held the position of Head of the Stem Cell Gene Transfer Unit at HSR-TIGET (Telethon Institute of Gene Therapy) since 2001. Her career includes roles as Group Leader (1996–2001) and Staff Scientist (1989–1996) at the same institute.
Education:
- PhD in Biological Sciences, University of Milan (1985)
- Post-doctoral fellowships at Wistar Institute (1985–1987) and AIRC (1987–1988)
Research Interests:
Her work focuses on gene therapy for genetic disorders such as ADA-SCID, β-thalassemia, and sickle cell disease. She pioneers advancements in hematopoietic stem cell biology, lentiviral vector design, and transcriptional targeting. Key contributions include the first murine model for SCID gene therapy (1991), immune reconstitution studies (2002), and stem cell plasticity research (1998).
Recent Article Trends:
Recent publications emphasize therapeutic strategies for hemoglobinopathies, immune barrier removal in stem cell transduction, and innovative vector systems for genetic disorders. Work spans clinical translation, niche biology, and gene editing technologies.
Awards:
- Rosa Camuna Award (2018)
Grants & Labs:
Leads the β-thalassemia clinical trial (TIGET-BTHAL, NCT02453477) and directs the HSR-TIGET GLP Facility. Active in grant coordination and academic GLP certification (2014).
Labs/Teams:
Head of the Stem Cell Gene Transfer Unit and member of international PhD and postdoctoral committees. Chairs the EATRIS ATMP Platform for translational medicine.
