Dr. Giulia Muraca is an Associate Professor in the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology at McMaster University's Faculty of Health Sciences. She specializes in perinatal epidemiology with a focus on maternal and neonatal outcomes related to different delivery methods, particularly examining safety and equity in obstetric care.
Dr. Muraca received her B.Sc. in Biological Anthropology and African Studies from the University of Toronto, followed by her M.P.H. and Ph.D. from the School of Population and Public Health at the University of British Columbia. She completed a Postdoctoral Fellowship in the Clinical Epidemiology Unit at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, Sweden, where she developed epidemiologic approaches to identify optimal intervention rates that minimize adverse maternal and neonatal outcomes.
Her research program focuses on using population-based data to characterize maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality across different delivery methods. She develops evidence to support enhanced safety and satisfaction in the care of pregnant individuals and their children, with emphasis on care quality, accessibility and equity. Her work spans multiple areas of obstetric epidemiology including operative vaginal delivery, cesarean delivery, maternal mortality, and health disparities.
Dr. Muraca's scholarly activity shows a strong focus on maternal outcomes, delivery methods, and health disparities. Her recent publications examine topics including racial disparities in obstetric outcomes, neonatal morbidity related to different delivery methods, guidelines for cesarean delivery care, and maternal mortality surveillance. She frequently employs population-based study designs and large datasets from Canada, the United States, and Sweden to address important questions in obstetrics and maternal health.

Dr. Muraca teaches courses including Applied epidemiological methods in secondary data analysis and Population and Public Health Research Methods. Her work has been widely disseminated through various platforms, with her publications being shared by numerous X (Twitter) users, Facebook pages, and read by researchers on Mendeley. Some of her publications have been picked up by news outlets and referenced in policy sources, indicating the relevance and impact of her research on maternal healthcare practices.
