Giulia Finotello is an Assistant Professor in the Power and Flow Group within the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). Her research focuses on experimental and numerical investigations of multiphase flows, particularly in metal powder production and reactive particle-based processes for additive manufacturing and CO2-free energy carriers. She leads the Finotello Group, which explores technologies for the regeneration of combusted metal powders within the iron fuel cycle. Her academic background includes a PhD in Chemical Engineering from TU/e (2019), with a thesis on droplet collision dynamics in spray dryers, followed by postdoctoral work in teaching and research.
Giulia's expertise spans multiphase reactors, electrochemical reduction processes, and fluid dynamics. She has secured grants for projects such as the 'REGENERATION OF METAL POWDER' (2021–2025) and 'Lighthouse - Metal Energy Carrier' (2020–2022), aiming to close the metal fuel cycle and develop sustainable energy storage solutions. She contributes to courses like Interfacial Transport Phenomena and Engineering Design.
Her research interests center on advancing metal fuel technologies, including iron powder production via spray atomization, electrochemical reduction of iron oxide, and combustion dynamics of metal particles. Notable achievements include pioneering studies on iron powder porosity using 3D X-ray imaging and developing rotating disk electrochemical reactors for sustainable iron production.
Giulia has received awards for her contributions, including the Best Oral Presentation at the 13th International Conference on CFD in 2018 and a Best Poster award at the DEFI Gathering in 2016. Her work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly in affordable and clean energy (SDG7) and industry innovation (SDG9).
Her lab activities emphasize collaboration across disciplines, with projects involving fluidized bed reactors, electrochemical systems, and advanced imaging techniques. She actively participates in conferences and organizes workshops, such as the 2024 Metal-enabled Cycle of Renewable Energy (MECRE) workshop, to foster innovation in sustainable energy technologies.
