Girbe Buist

Girbe Buist is Associate Professor in Molecular Bacteriology at UMCG, leading research on Staphylococcus aureus pathogenesis and diagnostic development.

Research focuses on bacterial surface proteins, antibody-based therapeutics, and host-pathogen interactions. Key contributions include the LysM domain application for surface display and human monoclonal antibodies against staphylococcal antigens.

Recent work develops peptidoglycan-based serodiagnostics (2025), characterizes peptidoglycan hydrolases as therapeutic targets (2024), and analyzes virulence heterogeneity in oral pathogens (2023).

Teaches Medical Microbiology and coordinates scientific training programs, with 93+ publications in bacteriology and host immunity.
