Giovanni Raimondo Rotiroti

Giovanni Raimondo Rotiroti serves as Associate Professor of Romanian Language and Literature at the University of Naples 'L'Orientale' within the Department of Literary, Linguistic, and Comparative Studies. His academic career spans multiple institutions including the 'Ovidius' University of Constanta and American universities such as Michigan, Wisconsin, and Duke. He has established Erasmus agreements with several Romanian universities and promotes cultural and scientific exchanges between Italy and Romania.

Rotiroti's research focuses on twentieth-century and contemporary Romanian literature within the European historical and cultural context, particularly examining works before and after the Auschwitz crisis. His multidisciplinary approach combines literary, philological, linguistic, and psychoanalytic perspectives, with special attention to the critical practice of translation. He has extensively studied Romanian authors including Urmuz, Tristan Tzara, Emil Cioran, Mircea Eliade, Eugen Ionesco, and Paul Celan, with particular emphasis on the Criterion generation and Romanian exile literature.

His scholarly output reveals strong trends in psychoanalytic literary criticism, particularly examining the intersection of philosophy and literature. Rotiroti's work frequently explores themes of exile, the secret, linguistic experimentation, and the relationship between translation and psychoanalytic concepts like transference. His research demonstrates consistent engagement with avant-garde movements and their philosophical implications, particularly regarding non-Oedipal conceptions of existence.

Rotiroti supervises postdoctoral fellows in Romania and doctoral students in Italy, holding teaching positions on ministry-accredited doctoral programs. Since 2012, he has coordinated a translation workshop for literary, poetic, and philosophical texts, and since 2019 has directed 'Nuovi Quaderni di Criterion' sponsored by COPYRO. In November 2022, he became president of CIRLEP (International Center for Research on Literatures and Psychoanalysis) at the University of Naples 'L'Orientale'.

He co-directs the interuniversity 'Progetto Cioran' research group formed through collaboration between the University of Naples 'L'Orientale' and the University of Timisoara 'Tibiscus,' which aims to establish an international network of scholars focused on Cioran's work. Since 2017, he has also participated in an international research group on historical avant-gardes directed by Professor Ion Pop at the University of Cluj-Napoca.
