Giovanni Piccoli serves as an Associate Professor at the University of Trento, holding dual affiliations with the Department of Cellular, Computational and Integrative Biology (CIBIO) and the Centre for Medical Sciences (CISMED). Based at Via Sommarive, 9 - 38123 Povo, he maintains active roles in both research and teaching within the university's scientific ecosystem.
His research spans Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, and Neuroscience with concentrated focus on Neurodegenerative Diseases, particularly Parkinson's Disease. He investigates molecular mechanisms involving proteins like Leucine-rich repeat kinase 2 (LRRK2) and Neuronal growth regulator 1 (NEGR1), examining their roles in synaptic function, neuronal growth regulation, and lipid-related pathways in neurodegeneration. His work integrates electrophysiology, molecular biology, and physiological modeling to dissect disease mechanisms.
Professor Piccoli teaches three core courses: Biochemistry for the Biomolecular Sciences and Technologies bachelor's program, covering protein structure, enzymology, and lipid biochemistry; Pharmacology addressing molecular pharmacology of receptors and drug actions on CNS/cardiovascular systems; and System Physiology for the Bioengineering for Personalized Medicine master's program, focusing on modeling human body system responses to perturbations. His teaching emphasizes practical skills like enzyme kinetics and chromatography alongside theoretical frameworks.
