Giovanni Piazza

Giovanni (Gianni) Piazza is an Associate Professor of Sociology of Political Phenomena at the University of Catania, where he has held this position since October 1, 2014. He previously served as a Researcher in Political Science from 2005 to 2014.

• Graduated in 1987 with a thesis on 'Collective Movements and the Italian Political System: the Case of Autonomia Operaia'
• PhD in Political Science from the University of Florence in 1995

His research focuses on social movements, political participation, and collective action, particularly during crises. He co-edits the journal Partecipazione e Conflitto and coordinates the SISP Standing Group on Social Movements. He is also a member of the SQEK (Squatting Europe Kollective) and serves on editorial advisory boards for journals like Contention.

His teaching includes Political Communication, Gramsci's Thought, and Social Movements, with recent thesis supervision on topics like 'Differentiated Autonomy' and 'Decolonial Movements.'
