Giovanni Ferro-Luzzi is Associate Professor of Economics, splitting his appointment 50/50 between the Geneva School of Economics and Management (GSEM) at the University of Geneva and the Geneva School of Management (HEG) of the University of Applied Sciences Western Switzerland (HES-SO). Since 2017 he has also served as Director of the Institute for Applied Research in Economics and Management (Ireg), a joint institute created by the two universities to carry out evidence-based studies for public and private decision-makers in the Geneva region.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Economics, University of Geneva
Research Interests:
His scholarly work lies at the intersection of applied micro-economics, labor economics, and public policy evaluation. Core themes include the functioning of labor markets, the economics of migration and cross-border employment, the measurement and determinants of inequality and poverty, discrimination (gender, origin, legal status), and the evaluation of social and education policies. He frequently employs advanced econometric and statistical techniques to quantify causal impacts and to inform local, cantonal, and national policy debates.
Recent projects have examined the health and labor-market consequences of legal status changes for undocumented migrants, the socio-economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on vulnerable households, the impact of minimum-wage regulations in the Geneva labor market, and the sustainability of Geneva’s economic growth beyond GDP metrics.
