Giovanni Ferrarese is a Research Fellow at the Institute for Mediterranean Studies, National Research Council (CNR), where he contributes to the project 'A Party in Movement: The PCI and Migration from Its Birth to Its Dissolution.' He holds a PhD in Political, Social, and Communication Sciences from the University of Salerno and serves as a contract professor of Contemporary History at the Department of Human, Philosophical, and Educational Sciences at the same university. Additionally, he leads the Historical Archives of the CGIL in Basilicata and the Institute of Economic and Social Research of Basilicata.
His research focuses on industrial history in Southern Italy, labor migration dynamics, and the environmental impact of agricultural activities. Key works include analyses of the chemical industry in Basilicata, labor union struggles in regional development, and historical studies on labor migration patterns. Ferrarese combines archival research with socio-economic analysis to explore the interplay between industrialization, politics, and environment in Italy's Mezzogiorno.
His publications span journals like Meridiana and Quaderni di Studi e Materiali di Storia delle Religioni, with monographs examining chemical industries and labor movements. His recent work addresses the complex relationship between economic development and environmental sustainability in post-war Italy, emphasizing Basilicata's unique challenges.
