Giovanni Douven is a Professor and teacher researcher at Inholland University of Applied Sciences, currently affiliated with the Lectorate Logistics and Complexity. His work focuses on applied research in logistics, particularly in air cargo, collaborative decision making, and sustainable business innovations. He actively collaborates with industry partners such as Air Cargo Netherlands and Schiphol Airport to drive digital transformation and efficiency in the logistics sector.
Professor Douven's research spans several key areas in logistics and supply chain management. He is particularly known for his work on collaborative decision making (CDM) in air cargo handling, which aims to optimize processes through data-driven solutions and cross-chain collaboration. His interests also include sustainable logistics, digital transformation in cargo communities, and the application of learning communities as tools for innovation. By leveraging quadruple-helix partnerships (involving industry, government, academia, and civil society), his research bridges the gap between theory and practice to address real-world challenges in the logistics industry.
Douven's recent publications (2020-2024) reveal a consistent focus on collaborative and digital approaches in logistics. His work on the CDM@Airports project (2024) demonstrates a strong emphasis on sustainability and digital solutions for data-driven logistics, while earlier articles explore learning communities (2021) and the implementation of systems like eLink (2013) to enhance efficiency. These publications collectively highlight his commitment to advancing logistics through innovation, collaboration, and practical application in the air cargo sector.
Professor Douven has supervised student research projects, such as the 2013 study on eLink at Schiphol Airport conducted by Logistics and Economics students. He has been instrumental in securing and managing research grants, notably leading the CDM@Airports project (2021-2023), a two-year initiative funded to explore collaborative decision making in Dutch airports. This project involved multiple stakeholders and resulted in a comprehensive final report detailing advancements in cross-chain collaboration, sustainability, and digital adoption.
As part of the Logistics and Complexity lectorate, Douven contributes to a living lab environment that integrates physical and digital learning spaces for education and multidisciplinary research. This setting fosters quadruple-helix collaboration, enabling real-time innovation and knowledge exchange among students, industry professionals, researchers, and policymakers.
