D'ORIO's research interests center on the effectiveness and efficiency of local development policies, corporate governance structures, and privatization processes. His work employs both parametric and non-parametric techniques for efficiency estimation. In recent years, his research has expanded to include environmental economics, particularly examining mercury pollution from gold mining operations in Ecuador, while maintaining his focus on regional well-being and sustainability in Italy. His interdisciplinary approach bridges economic theory with practical policy applications in both developed and developing contexts.
Analysis of D'ORIO's publication record reveals a clear evolution from theoretical work on corporate governance and privatization toward applied research on environmental impacts and regional development. His most recent publications (2021-2024) demonstrate a strong focus on mercury pollution from artisanal gold mining in Ecuador, with systematic assessments of health risks across different geographical regions including coastal, Andean, and Amazon areas. This represents a significant shift toward environmental economics while maintaining methodological rigor in policy evaluation.
D'ORIO is an active member of the 'DIVARI DI PRODUTTIVITA', INNOVAZIONE E POLITICHE DI SVILUPPO' research group and contributes to the Laboratorio di Economia dello Sviluppo Regionale (LESR), where he collaborates with researchers including Cardamone Paola, Lombardo Rosetta, and Aiello Francesco. His work at the laboratory focuses on economic and statistical analyses of regional economic systems, policy evaluation, and development planning.
Throughout his career, D'ORIO has maintained strong connections with international institutions, having served as a Teaching Fellow at the University of York and participated in numerous international conferences. His professional experience includes significant public sector engagement as Director of the Programming Sector for the Calabria Region (2007-2010), where he was responsible for EU program implementation.
