Giovanni Bazzana holds the Frothingham Professorship of the History of Religion and is a Professor of New Testament and Early Christian Studies at Harvard Divinity School (HDS). He earned his PhD from the International School of Modena, Italy. His research focuses on the early Christ movement within the contexts of Second Temple Judaism and Mediterranean antiquity. He specializes in gospels, apocalypses, and the socio-economic dynamics of early Christian communities.
His work bridges ancient texts with contemporary issues, particularly through papyrology and comparative ethnography. Current projects explore apocalyptic motifs in modern culture and the economic practices of early Christian groups. He teaches courses at HDS and collaborates with the Near Eastern Languages & Civilizations department at Harvard.
Bazzana’s books include Kingdom of Bureaucracy (2015) and Having the Spirit of Christ (2020). His research emphasizes critical political economy and the ethical challenges of late capitalism.
