Prof. Giovanni Bacaro is Associate Professor in Environmental and Applied Botany (SSD BIO/03) at the Department of Life Sciences, University of Trieste since 2015. He combines field ecology with remote sensing technology to study plant community responses to global change drivers.
His research focuses on species richness determinants across spatial scales, biological invasion mechanisms, functional trait analysis, and remote sensing applications for biodiversity monitoring. Current projects include In.Man.A.C.E. (Ailanthus altissima management) and SECAP (climate adaptation policies).
Key research themes:
- Multi-scale diversity patterns in Natura 2000 networks
- Functional trait-based invasion prediction models
- Optimized sampling strategies for vegetation surveys
- Development of biodiversity indicators
Scientific contributions include:
- Over 80 international publications
- 2009 recipient of the Francesca e Luigi Brusarosco Prize
- Editorial Board member of Diversity journal
He supervises multiple students and coordinates the bachelor degree program in Science and Technology for the Environment and Nature.
