Giorgio Gratta is the Ray Lyman Wilbur Professor of Physics and current department chair at Stanford University. His research focuses on experimental particle physics, particularly neutrino physics and short-distance gravity studies. He pioneered neutrino oscillation experiments using reactor neutrinos and leads the nEXO experiment searching for neutrinoless double beta decay. His group also explores force measurements using optically levitated microspheres to detect new interactions at micron scales.
Gratta's experimental efforts include developing liquid xenon detectors and applying optical levitation techniques for ultra-sensitive force sensing. He advises numerous graduate students and postdocs, and his lab collaborates internationally on major projects like nEXO. His work bridges fundamental physics with applications in Earth science (e.g., neutrino-based geophysics) and technological advancements in detector design.
