Gina Lewin is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology at the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, and a member of the Center for Global Health and Diseases. Her research focuses on microbial interactions in polymicrobial communities, particularly in the oral and vaginal microbiomes. She employs computational and experimental approaches to study how microbial diversity and environmental factors influence disease outcomes.
Dr. Lewin earned her PhD in Microbiology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2016) and a Bachelor of Arts in Molecular Biology from Pomona College (2010). Her lab (thelewinlab.com) investigates microbial physiology, spatial patterning, and ecological frameworks to understand how microbe-microbe interactions shape human health.
Key research projects include analyzing community-level diversity in oral and vaginal microbiota, studying Pseudomonas aeruginosa chronic infections in cystic fibrosis models, and exploring the antimicrobial potential of Streptomyces bacteria from insect microbiomes. Her work bridges ecological and evolutionary principles with clinical relevance.
