Dr. Gillian Glegg is an Associate Professor in Marine Management at the University of Plymouth's School of Biological and Marine Sciences. She coordinates undergraduate programs in Ocean Science, Marine Conservation, Oceanography and Coastal Processes, and Ocean Exploration, plus postgraduate courses in Applied Marine Science, Hydrography and Marine Conservation. Her research bridges marine science and policy, focusing on pollution regulation, coastal management, and marine spatial planning.
Current research examines pollution pathways from agricultural/urban sources, regulatory frameworks for marine protection, and integrated coastal management strategies. Recent publications analyze metal contamination in estuaries, ecosystem service assessments for marine planning, and public perceptions of marine priorities in the English Channel.
Substantial doctoral supervision includes 12 completed PhD projects covering marine pollution source tracking, spatial planning tools, conservation modeling, and sustainable tourism. Teaching emphasizes marine chemistry, pollution monitoring, coastal management, and field techniques including Scilly Isles expeditions.
Professional service includes Secretary for the Estuarine and Coastal Sciences Association (ECSA) and membership on the Faculty Research Ethics Committee. Research collaborations include European projects on marine policy integration (PEGASEAS) and ocean literacy (ResponSEAble).
