Gilles Ferrand is an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Manitoba, affiliated with the Faculty of Science. He is part of the eXtreme Astrophysics group and contributes to the SNR (Supernova Remnant) group. His career spans multiple institutions, including RIKEN (Japan) and CEA (France).
- PhD in Astrophysics, Université de Toulouse (2008)
- Master in Astrophysics, Université Paris 7 (2004)
- Master in Engineering, École Centrale de Nantes (2003)
His research focuses on the origin of cosmic rays, particle acceleration in supernova remnants, and the connection between thermonuclear supernovae and their remnants. He pioneered 3D simulations incorporating hydrodynamic instabilities and efficient particle acceleration, and maintains a high-energy observation catalog for Galactic remnants. In scientific visualization, he explores immersive VR techniques for 3D astronomical data.
He has held research positions at RIKEN, University of Manitoba, and CEA, and teaching roles at University of Manitoba and Université Toulouse III. Collaborations include the Cherenkov Telescope Array, CIRADA, and SN2SNR project. Public engagements include lectures on supernovae, cosmic rays, and art-astronomy intersections.
