Giles Barkley is a Senior Lecturer and Course Leader in the Department of Science and Engineering at Solent University. He joined in 1991 and specializes in yacht engineering-based degree programs, maintaining strong industry ties through alumni networks. His research focuses on reducing motor vessels' carbon footprints and hydrodynamics of sailing yachts.
Education: Graduated with a Ship Science degree in 1986. Early career included roles as a ship surveyor at Lloyd's Register across Southampton, Malta, and Belfast, later specializing in structural design of fibreglass yachts at Lloyd's London HQ.
Research interests span naval architecture, sustainable marine craft design, and propulsion efficiency. He has designed vessels like a 70-foot sailing catamaran and completed consultancy for yacht and commercial craft companies, including a French design firm and a UK motorboat company.
Teaching focuses on equipping students with industry-relevant design tools and skills through pedagogic methods. He manages the tow tank facility and collaborates with the Centre for Marine Sustainability. Outside academia, he races Laser dinghies and practices photography.
