Dr. Gilda A. Barabino is a Professor of Biomedical and Chemical Engineering and former President (2020–2025) of Olin College of Engineering. She is internationally recognized for her research on sickle cell biomechanics and global health equity, as well as her advocacy for diversity and inclusion in STEM. Her leadership roles include Chair of the National Academies’ Committee on Women in Science, Engineering, and Medicine, and President of AAAS (2021–2024). Dr. Barabino holds honorary degrees from Dartmouth and Xavier Universities, and is a member of the National Academies of Engineering and Medicine, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Education: PhD in Chemical Engineering from Rice University (1984), BS in Chemistry from Xavier University of Louisiana (1978). Research focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to eliminate healthcare disparities, with a focus on systems engineering and medical device equity. Notable contributions include co-authoring studies on pulse oximeter bias and electric field tissue dissociation techniques.
Awards: 2024 Dickson Prize in Science, Robert Fletcher Award (2023), and multiple leadership honors for advancing equity in academia. Key initiatives include founding the National Institute for Faculty Equity and leading the AAAS Action Collaborative on Women of Color in Tech.
