Gilbert Strang

Gilbert Strang is the MathWorks Professor of Mathematics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), holding this faculty chair since 2011. He joined MIT's mathematics faculty in 1962 and became a full professor in 1970. His academic journey includes a S.B. from MIT (1955), B.A. and M.A. from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar (1957), and a Ph.D. from UCLA (1959) under Peter Henrici.

Strang's research focuses on mathematical analysis, linear algebra, and partial differential equations (PDEs). He has authored influential textbooks on linear algebra, computational science, finite elements, wavelets, GPS, and calculus. His educational contributions include renowned video lectures on MIT OpenCourseWare and leadership roles, such as President of SIAM (1999–2000) and founder of Wellesley-Cambridge Press.

He has received prestigious awards including the Chauvenet Prize (1976), SIAM's Distinguished Service Award (2003), and membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Strang is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and an Honorary Fellow of Balliol College, Oxford.
