He holds the Jean Monnet (ad personam) Chair on Migration, Citizenship and Identity, a position funded by the European Commission to advance research and teaching in European integration studies.
His research centers on global history, migration, citizenship, and national identity, with a strong focus on the role of sport in shaping collective identities. He is director of the interdisciplinary Sport and Nation research program, which investigates how athletes with migrant backgrounds navigate national representation in football and the Olympics. Oonk is also an academic adviser for EUROCLIO (European Association of History Educators), where he contributes to initiatives that use sports history to foster historical thinking among young people.
His recent scholarly work explores themes such as antisemitism in football, foreign-born athletes in international competitions, and diasporic business communities. The publications reveal a consistent engagement with transnational identity, elite migration, and the politics of belonging in sports and society.
