Gideon Fujiwara

Gideon Fujiwara serves as Associate Professor in the History and Religion Department at the University of Lethbridge and Coordinator of the Asian Studies Program. His expertise spans Japanese social and intellectual history from the Tokugawa to Meiji periods.

His research investigates kokugaku, nation-building, regional identities, and information networks in 19th-century Japan. Current projects explore Tohoku's history, waka poetry in modernity, and soundscapes of global-local interactions. His monograph From Country to Nation (2021) examines ethnographic studies and spiritual practices in national formation.

Analysis of his publications reveals consistent focus on local intellectual communities (particularly Hirata School disciples) and their role in Japan's modernization. He employs interdisciplinary methods integrating history with musicology, literary studies, and visual culture to analyze cultural transformations through poetry, landscape, and information flows.

As Asian Studies Coordinator, Fujiwara teaches diverse courses including World History, Japan in International Relations, and seminars on East Asian nationalism. He contributes to curriculum development through the Program Advisory Committee, fostering interdisciplinary approaches to Asian studies across History and Asian Studies programs.
