Gianluca Ciardelli

Professor Gianluca Ciardelli is a Full Professor at Politecnico di Torino, specializing in Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering. He holds leadership roles as Chair of the 2025 European Society for Biomaterials Conference and Vice-chair of the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships Evaluation Panel. He earned a Master’s (summa cum laude) from the University of Pisa (1994) and a PhD in Natural Sciences from ETH Zurich (1997), focusing on biomedical polyurethanes. His research group, Bioinside Lab, develops biomedical polymers, scaffolds, hydrogels, and experimental organ models. With an h-index of 49 and over 9,000 citations, his work spans drug delivery, tissue engineering, and nanomedicine.

Recent activities include visiting the Catholic University of Portugal under the ERASMUS+ initiative (Oct 2024), delivering seminars on 3D bioprinting, polyurethanes, and regenerative medicine. He teaches at the Master’s level (Bionanotechnology, Bioengineering & Nanotechnologies) and serves on editorial boards of Nanomaterials and Journal of Healthcare Engineering. He has advised EU funding programs (REA, ESF, Eurostars) and organized international conferences.

Key achievements: 176 journal articles, 9 book chapters, and leadership in biomaterials innovation. His lab employs 15 researchers (PhD students, postdocs) with interdisciplinary expertise in chemical, biomedical engineering, and chemistry.
