Giacomo Mangini

Giacomo Mangini is a Senior Researcher at the Institute of Biosciences and BioResources (IBBR) of the National Research Council of Italy (CNR), based in Bari. He holds an Abilitazione Scientifica Nazionale (Italian National Scientific Habilitation) in agricultural chemistry, agricultural genetics, and soil science. His research activities are focused on the genetic diversity of wheat, association mapping, and identification of genes related to productivity and quality of cereals.

Dr. Mangini obtained his PhD in genetic improvement and pathology of agricultural and forest plants from the University of Bari Aldo Moro and is also licensed as an Agricultural Engineer. His work spans both fundamental and applied research, with particular emphasis on durum wheat genetics, olive biodiversity, and conservation of plant genetic resources. His research has significant implications for sustainable agriculture and food security in Mediterranean regions.

His publications reveal a strong focus on genome-wide association studies, quantitative trait loci mapping, and molecular characterization of crop genetic resources. His work often involves international collaborations, particularly with Tunisian research institutions, focusing on the conservation and utilization of traditional crop varieties in North Africa and Southern Italy. His research combines classical genetics with modern genomic approaches to address challenges in cereal breeding and quality improvement.

Dr. Mangini has served as a laboratory tutor for numerous student theses at the University of Bari Aldo Moro, focusing on wheat genetics and molecular characterization. He has participated in multiple research projects related to wheat genetics, olive biodiversity, and plant genetic resources conservation, including technical responsibility for the SAVEGRAINPUGLIA project for cereal units. His international collaborations include significant work with Tunisian institutions on conservation of traditional crop varieties. He is actively involved in scientific publishing as a Guest Editor for Agronomy and as a reviewer for several prominent plant science journals including Frontiers in Plant Science, BMC Genetics, and International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
