Giacomo Gianinni is currently a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow at Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf in the Department of Philosophy. Previously, he was a Fellow at the London School of Economics in the Department of Philosophy, Logic, and Scientific Method. He completed his PhD at Durham University in 2020 with a dissertation entitled 'Powers for Dispositionalism: A Metaphysical Ground for New Actualism', and earned his MA and BA in Philosophy from the University of Bologna, Italy.
Dr. Gianinni's research focuses on:
- Metaphysics and the metaphysics of science
- Modality, powers, essences, dependence & fundamentality
- Time, laws of nature, and the epistemology of modality
- Metaontology, meta-metaphysics, and metaphilosophy
His scholarly work demonstrates a consistent focus on dispositionalism as a theory of modality, examining its relationship with time, potentiality, and various philosophical challenges. Recent publications explore dated truths without dated powers, the intensity of powers, and solutions to the problem of necessary perfect masks. His research shows an evolving trajectory from foundational work on powers metaphysics toward increasingly sophisticated applications of dispositionalism to complex philosophical problems.
His scientific achievements include the prestigious Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellowship, a highly competitive European research grant awarded to promising scholars. His publications appear in top philosophy journals including Oxford Studies in Metaphysics, Australasian Journal of Philosophy, Erkenntnis, and Philosophical Quarterly.
Dr. Gianinni has collaborated with several notable philosophers including Donatella Donati, Tom Schoonen, and Stephen Mumford. His research connects metaphysical questions with broader philosophical concerns about knowledge, time, and scientific explanation.
