Getty L. Lustila is an Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Religion at Northeastern University’s College of Social Sciences and Humanities, where he also serves as Associate Director of the Humanities Center. He earned his PhD in Philosophy from Boston University in 2019, specializing in early modern European philosophy, history of ethics, and Indigenous philosophy.
- Research Interests: 17th/18th Century Philosophy, History of Ethics, Indigenous Philosophy, Moral Psychology, Environmental Philosophy, Social and Political Philosophy, Colonialism and Postcolonialism.
- Publications: Focus on Sophie de Grouchy’s moral theory, Catharine Trotter Cockburn’s ethical framework, John Gay’s utilitarianism, and intersections of punk rock ethics with philosophical theories.
- Service: Book reviews editor for the Journal of Scottish Philosophy, with active membership in the Choctaw Nation of Oklahoma.
His recent work analyzes remorse in Sophie de Grouchy’s moral progress, economic inequality critiques, minimalist love theories, and Hume’s gendered moral judgments. Publications bridge early modern ethics with contemporary issues like tribal sovereignty, environmental justice, and decolonizing gender norms.
Getty is currently co-authoring An Introduction to Indigenous Philosophy, integrating Native American thought into mainstream philosophical discourse. He teaches undergraduate and graduate courses on Indigenous philosophy, emphasizing storytelling methods and decolonization frameworks.
