Gert Goldenberg is an Associate Professor at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Innsbruck, where he has served since 2007. He is currently the Spokesperson of the HiMAT Research Center and leads projects on prehistoric copper production in the Alps. His academic journey began with mineralogy studies at the University of Freiburg im Breisgau (1977-1985), including a study year in Grenoble (1980-1981) and research in India (1983).
Goldenberg's research focuses on mining archaeology, archaeometallurgy, archaeometry, and experimental archaeometallurgy, with particular emphasis on mineral raw materials in cultural history. His work bridges geological sciences with archaeological interpretation, examining ancient mining techniques, metallurgical processes, and their environmental impact. He has conducted extensive fieldwork across the Alpine region, investigating prehistoric copper mining sites in North Tyrol, the Black Forest, and Portugal.
His recent publications reveal a consistent focus on prehistoric copper production in the Eastern Alps, with particular attention to the Schwaz-Brixlegg mining district. The research employs interdisciplinary approaches combining archaeological fieldwork, material analysis, and experimental reconstructions. His work demonstrates how technical innovations in mining and metallurgy were intertwined with social structures and environmental adaptations throughout prehistory.

As Spokesperson of the HiMAT Research Center, Goldenberg has secured significant funding for projects examining prehistoric copper production across the Eastern Alps. His work integrates multiple research teams including archaeologists, geologists, dendrochronologists, and environmental scientists. The research has established important chronologies for mining activities and revealed sophisticated technological knowledge among prehistoric miners.
His laboratory work focuses on experimental archaeometallurgy, where ancient smelting techniques are reconstructed to understand technological choices and limitations. The research group maintains extensive reference collections of archaeological slags, ores, and experimental products for comparative analysis.
