Gerry Veenstra is a Professor at the Department of Sociology, Faculty of Arts, University of British Columbia. Born in southern Ontario, he holds undergraduate degrees in Pure Mathematics and Sociology from the University of Waterloo (1992-1993) and graduate degrees in Sociology from McMaster University (1994-1999). His research focuses on the sociology of health, education, and social inequalities.

Veenstra investigates how social class and racial/ethnic identity intersect with physical and mental health outcomes across Canada, China, South Korea, Switzerland, and the United States. His work applies intersectionality theory to analyze health effects of 'race,' class, gender, and sexuality intersections. He has recently studied pickup soccer's health impacts among middle-aged men in Vancouver.
His funded research includes grants from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, Heart & Stroke Foundation, Michael Smith Foundation, and Social Sciences & Humanities Research Council. Scientific awards include Killam and CIHR career awards.
