Gerrit Knaap is a Professor of Urban Studies and Planning and Associate Dean of Research at the University of Maryland's School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Oregon (1982), an MA from the same institution, and a BS in Economics from Willamette University (1978). His research focuses on housing markets and policy, land use planning, economic development instruments, and environmental policy.
Key professional roles include serving on Maryland’s Smart Growth Subcabinet, Sustainable Growth Commission, and Governor’s Scientific Advisory Panel. His work has produced over 65 peer-reviewed articles and nine books, earning awards like the Chester Rapkin Award and the Outstanding Planner Award from the Maryland APA. Notable projects include studies on light rail impacts, smart growth policies, and equity in urban planning.
Knaap’s research integrates economics and policy, addressing challenges like urban sprawl and sustainable development. Recent work explores transit-oriented development (TOD), BIPOC business data, and regional sustainability modeling.
