Gerrit Hilgen is an Associate Professor in the Applied Sciences department at Northumbria University, specializing in retinal neuroscience. He joined in 2020 and leads research on neuronal signal processing, imaging, and scientific computing, focusing on the retina's role in health and disease. His work involves projects funded by the MRC, Wellcome Trust, and Academy of Medical Sciences, addressing vision restoration, light sensitivity in bipolar disorder, and ocular channelopathies.
His research integrates neuroscience, cellular imaging, multi-omics, and computational approaches to establish a leading laboratory. He co-leads the Translational Bioscience research theme, fostering collaborations in neuroscience, organoid science, and microscopy.
