Gernot Nehrke

Dr. Gernot Nehrke is a researcher at the Alfred Wegener Institute Helmholtz Centre for Polar and Marine Research in Bremerhaven, Germany. He leads and participates in significant research projects focused on marine and polar science.

His research interests span multiple areas of marine biogeochemistry and polar science:

• Marine biogeochemical processes, particularly calcification in pelagic environments
• Biomineralization processes and their global climate impacts
• Chemical processes in polar sea ice, including ikaite formation
• Metabolic processes in marine algae, including methane formation

Dr. Nehrke has been involved in several significant research projects. As a principal investigator, he has led the ongoing project "Pelagic calcification: from biomineralization to global impacts" which examines biomineralization processes and their broader climate implications. He previously completed the project "Identification of the processes leading to ikaite formation in polar sea ice" which focused on mineral formation in extreme polar environments. Additionally, he served as a cooperation partner in the project "The formation of methane in marine algae" investigating biochemical processes in marine organisms.

His work contributes significantly to understanding marine biogeochemical cycles, polar ecosystem dynamics, and the connections between biological processes and global climate systems.
