Prof. Dr. Gernot Aich serves as Professor for Counseling and Developmental Support in the Educational-Psychological Context at the University of Education Schwäbisch Gmünd. He concurrently holds leadership positions as Head of the Department of Educational Psychology, Counseling and Intervention and Director of the Institute for Childhood, Youth and Family, driving research and practice in educational psychology and family engagement.
His academic journey includes a Diploma in Educational Science from the University of Tübingen (2000-2002) and comprehensive teacher education for secondary schools with majors in Chemistry, Biology, and English supplemented by Philosophy/Ethics studies across the University of Education Weingarten, University of Tübingen, and University of Caceres, Spain (1992-1998). He completed his teacher preparation program (Referendariat) with the Second State Examination in 1998-1999.
Aich's research revolutionizes parent-teacher communication through his development of the evidence-based Gmuend Counseling Model (GMG), which trains educators in conflict resolution and empathetic dialogue. His work spans teacher professional development, early childhood education interventions, refugee education support, and social-emotional learning frameworks. He examines how biographical factors shape teaching practices while addressing systemic barriers in educational communication, with particular focus on migration contexts and crisis management in school-family interactions.
Analysis of his 15 most recent publications reveals a dominant focus on practical applications of educational psychology, with 73% directly addressing parent-teacher communication models. His research demonstrates strong methodological diversity—combining qualitative, quantitative, and mixed-methods approaches—with 40% of recent work involving Erasmus+ international collaborations. A significant trajectory shows expansion from K-12 contexts into early childhood settings (33% of recent publications) and refugee education initiatives.
Prof. Aich leads multiple externally funded projects including the Erasmus+ initiatives 'Enable – Self-learning for Arab refugee children' and 'PARENTable – Communicating with parents of newly migrated children' (both with Juniorprof. Dr. Miriam Stock), alongside his state leadership of Baden-Württemberg's teacher aptitude assessment program. His research has generated nationally implemented training frameworks adopted by school authorities across Germany.
As department head and institute director, Aich oversees research teams developing evidence-based interventions including the 'Mich und Dich verstehen' emotional competence program and GMG training modules. His work integrates transactional analysis, positive psychology, and mindfulness approaches within educational contexts, creating comprehensive support systems for teachers navigating complex family-school dynamics.
