Gerhard Schurz is a Senior Professor at the Faculty of Arts and Humanities of Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf, holding the Senior Professorship in Theoretical Philosophy. He coordinates the DFG Research Group Inductive Metaphysics and leads the project Parameterized Frames and Conceptual Spaces at the Düsseldorf Center for Logic and Philosophy of Science (DCLPS).
His research focuses on the methodology of metaphysics, emphasizing empirical and inductive approaches. Key projects include subprojects A2.1, B10, and A2.2 under the DFG Research Unit FOR 2495 Inductive Metaphysics, which aim to bridge metaphysical theory with scientific practice. He has supervised staff like Niklas Parwez (BA) and Maria Sekatskaya, and collaborates with researchers such as Markus Schrenk and Christian Feldbacher-Escamilla.
The DCLPS, under his leadership, engages in interdisciplinary studies spanning logic, philosophy of science, and cognitive science. His work challenges traditional a priori justifications in metaphysics, advocating for empirical grounding through inductive and abductive inference. Recent projects include studies on graded causation, free will, and the metaphysics of biological practice.
