Prof. Dr. Gerhard Schmiedl is a Professor for Micropaleontology at the Department of Earth System Sciences, Institute for Geology, University of Hamburg. His research focuses on benthic foraminifera, isotope geochemistry, and paleoceanography, with a strong emphasis on reconstructing deep-sea ecosystem variability and climate dynamics through fossil and recent microfossil assemblages.
- Education: Diplom in Geology and Paleontology (University of Würzburg), PhD (University of Bremen, 2001), Habilitation in historical geology and paleontology (University of Tübingen, 2001)
His career spans roles as a Heisenberg Fellow (2002-2006), Assistant Professor (C2) at the University of Leipzig (2001-2002), and postdoctoral research associate at institutions including the University of Tübingen, The Ohio State University, and the Alfred-Wegener-Institute. He has participated in over 20 research cruises across the Mediterranean, Arabian Sea, Red Sea, Antarctica, and the Caribbean, with fieldwork in Italy, Slovenia, and Hungary.
Scientific awards include the Heisenberg fellowship, Annette-Barthelt award, and multiple prestigious fellowships from Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes. He is a member of the Paläontologische Gesellschaft, Cushman Foundation for Foraminiferal Research, and Deutscher Hochschulverband.
